You Don't Have to Be

Sick to Get Better

In addition to the expected gains of a greater sense of well-being, improved relationships and enhanced sense of being in charge of your response to life, research indicates several possible gains to psychotherapy:

Improved physical health. There is a strong mind-body connection. Actually, many authors talk about mindbody unity rather than connection. Emotional distress affects our physical strength and energy. We can handle it easily over the short term. However, long term distress increases the body's vulnerability to a wide range of problems because of depletion of the body's natural resources such as immune system functioning. Similarly, prolonged physical distress increases emotional distress. When suffering from a physical illness of any kind, you will heal more efficiently (and for less financial cost, overall) when needed psychotherapy is included in the treatment.

Enhanced productivity. Long term emotional distress is likely to interfere with productivity on the job. We do not do our best when we are anxious or upset. Research shows that a person's income often increases after effective therapy.

Personal Growth. Hypnosis and Neurolinguistic Programming are two modalities that offer methods for making personal change in areas such as habit control, weight control, and enhanced performance in school, work, sports and artistic expression.

Enhanced Relationships. Marital therapy can lead to greater intimacy, mutual support, and contentment. Enhancing the relationship is economically beneficial as it helps people avoid high legal fees for divorce. And for those who decide to divorce, effective therapy can reduce costs associated with bitterness expressing itself through the courts after divorce.
